Monday, May 15th: Today's start up for Aristotle, Galileo and Newton was to create a story about a zombie plague on the Titanic. During class, students began looking up background information for our last reading of the school year. Students worked on the assignment on Google Classroom. Tesla did not have a start up. During class, Tesla worked to dissect and analyze poems from Langston Hughes (found on handouts page).

Friday, May 12th: Eighth grade field trip to Morehead Planetarium in Chapel Hill.
Thursday, May 11th: Today's start up for Aristotle, Galileo, and Newton was to copy their vocabulary definitions (quiz on Friday, May 19th). Found on handouts page. During class, Aristotle, Galileo and Newton dissected and analyzed three poems from Langston Hughes (I, Too; Merry-Go-Round; Democracy). Found on handouts page. These classes were also reminded they will have a test on the Harlem Renaissance on Tuesday, May 16th. Tesla's start up was to create a story about a zombie plague on the Titanic. Wednesday, May 10th: Today's start up students were to read a small paragraph in the literature textbook about the characteristics of a myth. Aristotle, Galileo and Newton spent the class period creating a group myth to explain something about the world around them. Tesla completed the Zora Neale Hurston reading the other classes did on Tuesday.

Tuesday, May 9th: There was no start up today. During class, Aristotle and Galileo completed the notes for the Harlem Renaissance. Then students worked on some questions for Zora Neale Hurston's Why the Waves Have Whitecaps. (Notes, story, and questions can be found under Handouts section) Newton worked on the Zora Neale Hurston story, Why the Waves Have Whitecaps. Tesla took notes on the background information for the Harlem Renaissance unit.

During class, these students went over some background information for our next small unit on the Harlem Renaissance (notes will be uploaded at the end of the day tomorrow). The start up for Newton and Tesla was a 5-7 sentence free write. During class, Newton dissected/studied the poems "I, Too" and "Merry-Go-Round" by Langston Hughes. Tesla used today as their last day to work in class on their essays.

During class, Aristotle and Galileo completed a Web Quest for our next unit on the Harlem Renaissance. Newton finished the notes for the Harlem Renaissance and completed a biography reading for our first author, Langston Hughes. Tesla reviewed Works Cited pages and in-text citations while working on their essays.
Homework: Aristotle and Galileo are reminded their essays are due TOMORROW by the end of the day. Newton needs to finish the reading if they did not complete it during class.

Students then spent the rest of the class period working on finishing their essays. Newton continued taking notes on the Harlem Renaissance. Students who did not complete the "Passing" reading from yesterday also had an opportunity to work on it. Tesla took their final novel study test and spent the rest of the class period working on writing their essays.

Tuesday, May 2nd: There was no start up today. Today students took their 3rd Math Benchmark. Students then saw all core classes for a shorten period. Aristotle, Galileo and Tesla all were able to make progress on writing their essays using their graphic organizers. Newton completed a reading entitled "Passing" and finish anyone who had not finished the WebQuest had the opportunity to finish it today.
Homework: Tesla is reminded their final Novel Study is due tomorrow.
Monday, May 1st: Today's start up was to list 5 movies you think everyone your age should see. Write 1 or 2 sentences for each explaining why. During class, Aristotle and Galileo began writing their essay paragraphs from their graphic organizer. Newton took a few notes on the events that led to the Harlem Renaissance. These students also completed their WebQuest on Google Classroom from Friday. Tesla completed their graphic organizers and some students began working on writing their essays.
Homework: Students who had to leave for chorus rehearsal make sure you turn in your graphic organizer!
Friday, April 28th: There was no start up today. During class, Aristotle, Galileo and Tesla worked on their essay graphic organizer. Aristotle and Galileo were to turn in the organizer by the end of today. Tesla will receive one more class day (Monday) to work on the organizer before turning it in. Newton submitted their essays today and began working on a Harlem Renaissance Web Quest activity (Google Classroom).

Thursday, April 27th: There was no start up today. During class, Aristotle and Galileo worked on their essay graphic organizer. Students will finish their organizer and turn it in tomorrow. Newton worked on in-text citations for their papers. Newton's paper is due tomorrow by the end of the day.

During class, Aristotle, Galileo and Tesla had the opportunity to correct their population calculations from yesterday before submitting them for a grade. Students then began working on a graphic organizer for their argumentative research essay (found on Google Classroom). Newton spent the class period creating their Works Cited page for their argumentative research essay.

Tuesday, April 25th: There was no start up today. During class, Aristotle, Galileo and Tesla took their test on Kurt Vonnegut's short stories (Harrison Bergeron and 2BR02B). Students then spent the remainder of the class period working on population math calculations on Google Classroom. Newton continued working on their research essays. These students spent the day going through their rough drafts removing "I" "me" "my" and contractions. Students also received permission forms for the 8th grade field trip.
Homework: Aristotle, Galileo and Tesla complete math calculations if you did not finish them in class.
Monday, April 24th: Today's start up was to write 5-7 sentences about your spring break. During class, Aristotle, Galileo and Tesla completed a Triple Venn Diagram comparing and contrasting Anthem, Harrison Bergeron and 2BR02B. Tesla also finished the theme paragraph for 2BR02B. Newton continued working on their research argumentative essays. Students should have complete their rough drafts by the end of class today and formatted their papers in MLA format.

Thursday, April 13th: The start up today was using Tuesday's start up quote to make up a story. During class, Aristotle and Galileo finished their 2BR02B theme. Galileo also finished their foreshadowing questions. Newton worked on paraphrasing vs. direct quotes. Tesla worked with Ms. Rogers with Hamlet's To Be or Not to Be.

After the quiz, students worked on Google Classroom identifying the theme of 2BR02B. Tesla also completed the plot/foreshadowing exercise from yesterday. Newton turned in their Independent Novel Studies and took their novel test. Newton then worked on writing the first three paragraphs of their argumentative essays from the information on the organizational chart.

During class, Aristotle, Galileo and Tesla completed the Plot diagram and foreshadowing questions for 2BR02B. See Handouts section. Newton learned about a hook sentence and began turning their organizer boxes into written paragraphs for their essays.

During class, Aristotle, Galileo and Tesla finished reviewing the story 2BR02B and focused on symbolism and specific lines meanings. Newton worked on their counter claims and conclusion boxes for their essay organizer.
Homework: Newton should be complete done filling out their essay organizer.
Friday, April 7th: Today's start up was a free write for 5-7 sentences. During class, Aristotle and Galileo finished reading "2BR02B" in their groups. These students also completed a CommonLit poetry reading of "Do Not Go Gentle Into that Good Night". During Newton, students finished finding their three reasons for their argument and some students began researching the counterclaim and rebuttal. See Google Classroom Graphic Organizer. Tesla finished reading "2BR02B" in their groups and we began reviewing the story through class discussion.
Homework: Aristotle and Galileo need to finish the CommonLit poem if they did not complete during class.
Thursday, April 6th: Today's start up was to write 5-7 sentences on the following: Some argue people should be allowed to have however many children they want "within reason." Is there a reasonable max number? If yes, what is it an why is this number reasonable? If no, why not? During class, Aristotle discussed the start up, statement chart from the informational reading and began reading our short story "2BR02B". Galileo discussed the start up and the statement chart today. Newton continued working on their argumentative research essays. Students finished finding background information on the topic and began working on their reasons for their arguments. Tesla worked with Ms. Rogers today.
Homework: Newton has a test tomorrow on 2BR02B and should study.
Wednesday, April 5th: Today there was no start up. During class, Aristotle and Galileo took their final novel study test and turned in their packet. Newton continued their research for their argumentative essay on Google Classroom. Tesla finished their statement chart opinions from yesterday and completed their first read through on the short story "2BR02B" and answering the reading guide questions. Both can be found on Handouts page.
Homework: Newton should be done with the first box on their graphic organizer (basic background on the topic and their position).
Tuesday, April 4th: Today's start up for Aristotle, Galileo and Tesla was to copy their new vocabulary definitions. Vocabulary terms can be found through Handouts page and quiz will be on Wednesday, April 12th. During class, students completed a reading on Population Growth and answered corresponding reading questions. Click here for the reading. See Handouts page for the questions. Tesla also discussed the themes found in Harrison Bergeron. Newton did not have a start up. During class, Newton completed population math calculations and began constructing their argumentative essays (Graphic Organizer is on Google Classroom).

Students then discussed the themes found in Harrison Bergeron. Newton completed their theme question for 2BR02B on Google Classroom. Tesla watched 2081 also but used the remainder of the class to finish their text dependent questions for Harrison Bergeron.

Friday, March 31st: There was no start up today. Aristotle, Galileo and Tesla took their vocabulary quiz for Harrison Bergeron. Students then spent the remainder of the class period finishing their text dependent questions for Harrison Bergeron. Students who did not finish and submit their responses are expected to complete over the weekend. Newton finished working on their themes for 2BRO2B on Google Classroom. Students then had the remainder of the class period to work on their novel studies (Due on April 12th).

Thursday, March 30th: Today's start up is to write 5-7 sentences on the following: "Who controls the past controls the future. During class, Aristotle and Galileo worked on their text dependent questions for Harrison Bergeron. Students were expected to finish question number 2 today. Newton reviewed subject and themes and began working on a theme for 2BRO2B on Google Classroom. Tesla worked with Ms. Rogers to finish their utopia, dystopia, anti-utopia lesson from last week on Google Classroom.
Homework: Aristotle, Galileo and Tesla are reminded to study for their vocabulary quiz. Aristotle and Galileo should be finished with question #2 on Google Classroom. Tesla should be finished with question #1. Newton has no homework.

During Newton, students completed their text dependent question for 2BRO2B.

During class, students reviewed figurative language and worked with identifying/analyzing extended metaphors.

Once they were done with the test they had an opportunity to finish/correct the theme development assignment from the previous two days. Students in Tesla also were given a MasterConnection Practice on Google Classroom to complete. Newton's start up today was: If you had to design a painting to be a metaphor for this world/society (like in the story), what would be in your painting? Why? During class, Newton completed their plot diagrams for 2BRO2B and began answering questions about foreshadowing found within the story.

Wednesday, April 5th: Today there was no start up. During class, Aristotle and Galileo took their final novel study test and turned in their packet. Newton continued their research for their argumentative essay on Google Classroom. Tesla finished their statement chart opinions from yesterday and completed their first read through on the short story "2BR02B" and answering the reading guide questions. Both can be found on Handouts page.
Homework: Newton should be done with the first box on their graphic organizer (basic background on the topic and their position).
Tuesday, April 4th: Today's start up for Aristotle, Galileo and Tesla was to copy their new vocabulary definitions. Vocabulary terms can be found through Handouts page and quiz will be on Wednesday, April 12th. During class, students completed a reading on Population Growth and answered corresponding reading questions. Click here for the reading. See Handouts page for the questions. Tesla also discussed the themes found in Harrison Bergeron. Newton did not have a start up. During class, Newton completed population math calculations and began constructing their argumentative essays (Graphic Organizer is on Google Classroom).
Homework: Aristotle and Galileo Novel Studies are due TOMORROW!!! Make sure you have everything to turn in. Newton will have a test on Friday (April 7th) for 2BR02B.
Monday, April 3rd: Today's start up was a free write. During class, Aristotle and Galileo watched a short film based on the reading Harrison Bergeron entitled 2081. Students then discussed the themes found in Harrison Bergeron. Newton completed their theme question for 2BR02B on Google Classroom. Tesla watched 2081 also but used the remainder of the class to finish their text dependent questions for Harrison Bergeron.

Friday, March 31st: There was no start up today. Aristotle, Galileo and Tesla took their vocabulary quiz for Harrison Bergeron. Students then spent the remainder of the class period finishing their text dependent questions for Harrison Bergeron. Students who did not finish and submit their responses are expected to complete over the weekend. Newton finished working on their themes for 2BRO2B on Google Classroom. Students then had the remainder of the class period to work on their novel studies (Due on April 12th).
Homework: Aristotle, Galileo and Tesla are to finish their text dependent questions if they did not complete by the end of today's class period and turn in by the beginning of class on Monday.
Thursday, March 30th: Today's start up is to write 5-7 sentences on the following: "Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past." ~George Orwell What does Orwell mean in this quote? How does it relate to our readings for the last month? During class, Aristotle and Galileo worked on their text dependent questions for Harrison Bergeron. Students were expected to finish question number 2 today. Newton reviewed subject and themes and began working on a theme for 2BRO2B on Google Classroom. Tesla worked with Ms. Rogers to finish their utopia, dystopia, anti-utopia lesson from last week on Google Classroom.
Homework: Aristotle, Galileo and Tesla are reminded to study for their vocabulary quiz. Aristotle and Galileo should be finished with question #2 on Google Classroom. Tesla should be finished with question #1. Newton has no homework.
Wednesday, March 29th: Today's start up was to write 5-7 sentences on the following: "People shouldn't be afraid of the government. Governments should be afraid of the people." ~Alan Moore What does Moore mean in this quote? How does it relate to our readings for the last month? During class, Aristotle, Galileo and Tesla finished reviewing the story Harrison Bergeron. These students began working on text dependent questions for Harrison (found on Google Classroom). During Newton, students completed their text dependent question for 2BRO2B.
Homework: Students should finish the first text dependent question tonight if they did not finish the first question in class.
Tuesday, March 28th: There was no start up today. Due to our Language Arts Benchmark Exam students had an abbreviated schedule. Aristotle and Galileo worked on their Independent Novel Studies which are due one week from tomorrow. Newton continued working on their one text dependent question for 2BRO2B on Google Classroom. Tesla worked to finish reviewing the story Harrison Bergeron.

Monday, March 27th: Today's start up was to write 5-7 sentences on the following: Is equality a good or bad thing? Why? Is true equality possible? Why or why not? When we discuss equality in relationship to the United States, what are we referring to? During class, Aristotle, Galileo and Tesla began to review the story Harrison Bergeron as a class. Newton began working on their text dependent question for 2BRO2B on Google Classroom.

Friday, March 24th: There was no start up today. Today students went to the library. Aristotle and Galileo were given the class period to work on their novel studies. Newton took their vocabulary quiz then worked on their foreshadowing questions for 2BRO2B before they were given time to work on their novel study. Tesla completed the short story reading and questions for Harrison Bergeron that the other classes did yesterday.

Thursday, March 23rd: Today's start up for Aristotle, Galileo and Tesla was to copy their new vocabulary terms (quiz on March 31st). See Google Classroom for words. During class, Aristotle and Galileo read a short story, Harrison Bergeron, and answered basic reading comprehension question. See Handouts section for material. During Tesla, Ms. Rogers worked with them on identifying utopia, dystopia and anti-utopia. Newton's start up today was: What is your favorite song? Why? During class, students reviewed figurative language and worked with identifying/analyzing extended metaphors.

Wednesday, March 22nd: Aristotle, Galileo and Tesla did not have a start up today. During class, these students took their test on Anthem. Once they were done with the test they had an opportunity to finish/correct the theme development assignment from the previous two days. Students in Tesla also were given a MasterConnection Practice on Google Classroom to complete. Newton's start up today was: If you had to design a painting to be a metaphor for this world/society (like in the story), what would be in your painting? Why? During class, Newton completed their plot diagrams for 2BRO2B and began answering questions about foreshadowing found within the story.

Tuesday, March 21st: The start up for today was a free write. During class, Aristotle, Galileo and Tesla completed their theme development analysis from yesterday. Newton finished going over the story 2BRO2B and then began working on a plot diagram for the story.
Homework: Aristotle, Galileo, and Tesla: STUDY for Anthem test!!! Tesla is reminded their journals are due by the end of today.
Monday, March 20th: The start up for Aristotle, Galileo and Tesla was to write 5-7 sentences on the following: If you were Equality and had escaped the society safely, would you risk going back to get others? Why or why not? These students spent the class period analyzing the development of themes throughout Anthem on Google Classroom. Newton's start up was to write 5-7 sentences on the following: What do you think would be the best solution to overpopulation? Why? During class, Newton began going over the story 2BRO2B as a class.
Homework: Aristotle and Galileo journals are due by the end of the day today. Tesla is reminded their journals are due by end of the day tomorrow.
